Toespraak van paus Leo bij privé audiëntie PPS – 18 februari 2026
Het hoogtepunt van onze pelgrimage vormde een privé audiëntie op woensdag 18/2 bij onze nieuwe paus Leo XIV. De paus sprak ons persoonlijk toe. Hieronder een samenvatting van zijn toespraak (bron: Vatican News).
De paus refereerde aan het historische belang van PPS voor de vorming van de Vaticaanse staat. Hij herinnerde ons er aan, dat de leden van de vereniging verre erfgenamen zijn van de Pauselijke Zouaven, een infanteriebataljon van jonge katholieke mannen, die zich vrijwillig aanmeldden om paus Pius IX te helpen bij het verdedigen van de Pauselijke Staten. In zijn toespraak prees de paus onze PPS vereniging voor haar inspanningen om de Apostolische Stoel duurzaam te steunen.
Hij merkte op dat de sociaal-historische situatie sinds het midden van de 19e eeuw is veranderd en dat er “geen sprake is van vecten met wapens of het uitoefenen van welk geweld dan ook” om de vrijheid van de paus te verdedigen. Zelfs paus Pius IX, zo zei hij, verrichtte een profetisch gebaar door te weigeren bloedvergieten in Rome toe te staan, toen de Italiaanse Risorgimento-troepen de stad in september 1870 innamen.
De verkondiging van het Koninkrijk Gods wordt echter nog steeds op veel plaatsen en manieren belemmerd, aldus de paus en hij voegde eraan toe dat de missie van onze vereniging vandaag de dag nog steeds relevant is. De bisschop van Rome, zo bevestigde hij, heeft de opdracht gekregen om de gelovigen in eenheid te verenigen en het evangelie van de verlossing te verkondigen.
“Hoe belangrijk is het,” zei hij, “in de onrustige tijden waarin we leven, dat Petrus zijn volledige vrijheid behoudt om de waarheid te spreken, onrecht aan de kaak te stellen, de rechten van de zwaksten te verdedigen, vrede te bevorderen en bovenal Jezus Christus te verkondigen, die stierf en opstond, de enige mogelijke horizon voor een verzoende mensheid.”
Paus Leo XIV bedankte vervolgens de Pro Petri Sede Vereniging voor hun gebeden en liefdadigheidsactiviteiten ten behoeve van de armen. Hij sprak zijn bijzondere dankbaarheid uit voor de financiële steun van de vereniging aan een liefdadigheidsproject van zijn voormalige bisdom Chiclayo in Peru. “De oprichting van een opleidingscentrum voor de meest behoeftigen zal van groot nut zijn en zal mij, hoewel door de afstand gescheiden, in staat stellen om door gedachten en naastenliefde dicht bij al deze mensen te blijven,” zei hij.
Tot slot benadrukte de paus de kracht van het gebed ter ondersteuning van het werk van de paus en de Heilige Stoel en vertrouwde hij al de leden van Pro Petri Sede toe aan de voorspraak van de Heilige Maagd Maria (link naar de tekst van de toespaak van de paus).
Na de toespraak werd door onze penningmeester een cheque overhandigd aan de paus ter ondersteuning van het project in Chiclayo in Peru. Alle delegatieleden mochten de paus persoonlijk de hand schudden. Aan het eind van de audiëntie gaf hij ons de apostolische zegen (link naar de video met de toespraak van de paus).

Peace be with you!
Brothers and sisters, good morning and welcome!
I am pleased to meet you, dear members of the Pro Petri Sede Association, on the occasion of your pilgrimage to Rome. I know that you come regularly to meet the Successor of Peter – every three years, I believe – in order to express to him your attachment and your fidelity, publicly and symbolically manifesting the meaning of your charism: to support the Apostolic See, as the very name of your Association indicates. In fact, you are distant heirs of the papal Zouaves, who committed themselves unconditionally, even to the point of giving their lives, to defend the freedom of the Roman pontiff, threatened at the time. The socio-historic conditions have obviously changed, and today there is no longer any question of fighting with weapons or exercising any kind of violence. Moreover, did not my blessed predecessor Pius IX himself refuse to allow blood to be shed before the walls of Rome? A prophetic gesture that the real battle is of a different nature…
Your unconditional commitment to the Pope is expressed today mainly through your prayers, your efforts to explain to the faithful the role and action of the Holy See, and your material offerings, especially in favour of the least fortunate. I thank you most sincerely! I am very touched that this year you have chosen to support a charitable project in my beloved former diocese of Chiclayo. The creation of a centre of formation for those most in need will be of great benefit and will allow me, despite the distance, to remain close to all these people in my thoughts and charity. I thank you again from the bottom of my heart, and I also thank you on behalf of the Bishop of Chiclayo, His Excellency Monsignor Edinson Farfán.
Dear friends, I ask you to persevere in your important mission of supporting the Apostolic See, a mission that remains as meaningful today as ever, and even to extend it, if possible. Indeed, the Bishop of Rome has received from Christ the task of gathering the faithful people into unity and proclaiming the Gospel of Salvation throughout the earth; and the charism of his Successors implies the sovereign freedom to do so. Yet the proclamation of the Kingdom is hindered in many places throughout the world, and in many ways. How important it is, therefore, in the troubled times in which we live, that ‘Peter’ retain his complete freedom to speak the truth, denounce injustice, defend the rights of the weakest, promote peace, and above all proclaim Jesus Christ, who died and rose again, the only possible hope for a reconcilated humanity.
I thank you once again for your prayers. They are of great importance for the Church; they are also a great comfort for me in the exercise of my office.
As I entrust you, all the members of your association, without forgetting your families, to the intercession of the Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, and to the protection of the Apostle Peter, I gladly impart to you the Apostolic Blessing.
